Trinity College London’s Repertoire-only pathway offers a flexible alternative to traditional graded music exams which require technical components to be examined – an ideal option for students who shine when performing pieces they truly connect with.
The Repertoire-only pathway is a digital graded music exam, available from Initial – Grade 8, that focuses entirely on performance. Students perform four pieces (or five for singers at Grades 6-8) – no scales, sight-reading or supporting tests required. If you’re familiar with Performance Grades from the likes of ABRSM, you’ll already understand the concept. Trinity’s exam offers the same performance-focused structure – but with much more added flexibility and accessibility for teachers and students.
Some students engage most deeply with pieces. The Repertoire-only pathway gives them more choice, ownership and enjoyment – helping them stay motivated for longer and enjoying their progress.
Use the Repertoire-only format to continue to explore technique, interpretation, theory and more – all through the context of the chosen pieces your students will love to learn and perform.
The Repertoire-only pathway offers a readily available digital exam option for those learners who may benefit from a less structured or more performance-focused approach to succeed.
No Grade 5 theory requirements to limit access to taking higher grades. No target durations to work to. Just meaningful performance, delivered on the student’s terms.
Spanning classical masterpieces, modern favourites, rock and pop and even film and video game scores – there is so much choice. Foster a lifelong love of music with pieces students will be passionate about and want to learn. Discover our repertoire now!

"The Repertoire-only pathway really suits my students because it keeps them focused on the joy of playing music. They get to dive into pieces they enjoy and connect with, without the extra pressure of technical work or supporting tests. I still teach technique and it’s naturally woven into the music they’re learning. Overall, it keeps lessons fun, musical, and engaging, which helps students stay motivated and confident."
