Trinity College London’s annual Future of English Language Teaching (FoELT) conference returns on Saturday 3 October 2026, bringing together English language teaching professionals from around the world for a free day of online professional development.
Now in its 11th year, FoELT provides an opportunity for teachers, teacher educators, researchers and other English language professionals to share ideas, explore current practice and consider developments shaping the future of English language teaching.
Under the theme Inspire. Learn. Lead. FoELT 2026 will feature four specialist strands:
- Young Learners — practical approaches to developing confident, creative and independent communicators
- Technology and Innovation — exploring AI, digital tools and the role of technology in teaching and learning
- English for Specific Purposes — focusing on English for academic, professional and other specific contexts
- Teacher Education — exploring teacher development, from initial teacher education to continuing professional development and educational leadership.
Participants can choose from four rounds of breakout sessions across the strands, as well as pop-up presentations throughout the day.
FoELT 2026 plenary speakers
This year’s conference will feature plenary sessions from Katy Kelly and Professor John Gray.
Katy Kelly will explore how creative content can encourage authentic language use among young learners, drawing on her experience in early years, primary and secondary education.
Professor John Gray of UCL will close the conference with a plenary exploring Critical English Language Teacher Education and pedagogic humility.
Across the wider programme, speakers will cover topics including oracy, storytelling and critical thinking, AI and virtual reality, intercultural communication, inclusive assessment, sustainability and metacognition in teacher education.

FoELT 2026 is free to attend and open to English language professionals around the world at all stages of their careers.
Sessions will take place live online on **Saturday 3 October 2026**, with recordings available to registered participants after the event. Participants will also receive a certificate of attendance for their continuing professional development portfolio.
