Name: Pei-Chih
Location: Taiwan
Trinity qualification: CertPT
Pei-Chih teaches at National Tsing Hua University, where she delivers courses to international students using English as the medium of instruction. With experience teaching in Taiwan and Japan, she was already confident using English in the classroom. However, she soon realised that effective teaching required more than language proficiency alone.
“EMI is not only English-medium instruction — it's more than that. It's a teaching skill that can help me overcome any kind of language barrier.”
Building confidence and professional credibility
Like many educators, Pei-Chih completed the course while continuing to teach full time. Instead of seeing the qualification as an additional burden, she integrated it into her everyday responsibilities.
“I put EMI tasks and other things into my work schedule. It is part of my work so I didn't feel very stressed on the course.”
One of the most significant outcomes of the CertPT for Pei-Chih was the positive impact on her students. The course helped her develop new approaches that made lessons more engaging, interactive and effective.
“I think the students are the ones who benefit the most, because they can experience more interactive types of teaching methods in their classroom.”
“I also learned how to integrate EMI techniques into my teaching and practice research, and I was able to get research grants from the government based on the knowledge that I learned from EMI and how I applied it in my classroom.”
After completing the qualification, Pei-Chih continued her professional development and became actively involved in supporting other teachers. She now delivers workshops and helps colleagues work towards their own certification - completing what she describes as a full-circle professional journey.
“One of the reasons that I joined the advanced EMI training was to be influential. I need to have a teaching structure and a theoretical background in my mind so that I can understand the normal things that I do in my classroom.”
Having completed the course and now supporting others through it, Pei-Chih has a clear message for educators who are unsure whether to take the next step.
“I would say: do it right now - this is not an extra thing you need to do. This is part of your work.”
"I think the students are the ones who benefit the most, because they can experience more interactive types of teaching methods in their classroom."
