'Music at School' — research, qualifications and teacher training

Location: Italy

In 2018, the Comitato Nazionale per l’Apprendimento Pratico della Musica per tutti gli studenti (National Committee for Practical Learning of Music for all Students - CNAPM), within the Italian Ministry of Education, signed an MOU with Trinity to undertake a research study into the impact of Trinity’s assessment materials and exams on music teaching and learning in schools across all phases in Italy.

“Music is for everyone, it is inclusive, it is creative, and it is an experience that young people should live actively as protagonists.”

Prof. Spadolini
Chair of the National Committee for the Practical Learning of Music (CNAPM)

Nearly 100 schools and 130 teachers are involved in this large-scale project, which includes:

  • Curriculum design enabling the assessment of students' musical skills through Trinity’s music assessment portfolio and publications.
  • Training and supporting teachers through CPD (Continuing Professional Development) to foster curriculum development.
  • Creation of an international community of teachers to share best practices in learning and teaching music.

Initial findings from the project report:

  • Greater innovation in the design of music curricula.
  • Improved motivation and retention among students, driven by the pursuit of qualifications aligned with the European Qualifications Framework (EQF).
  • Increased motivation among teachers.

From National research to regional support: the Musica a scuola Program

The Musica a Scuola project represents the natural continuation of the national research project, and its primary purpose is to give even greater concreteness to the objectives achieved by the first pilot project. This initiative shifts focus from a broad national approach to tailored regional support, addressing the specific needs of music teachers in different areas. The program provides free training and professional development opportunities, curated by Trinity in collaboration with the CNAPM and the Regional Education Offices of the Ministry of Education and Merit.

The Musica a scuola program was designed in response to an identified gap in professional training opportunities for music teachers. Its goal is to provide targeted support, ensuring that schools across all regions benefit from enhanced music education while fostering a deeper understanding of and relationship with Trinity.

“In 2000, during my tenure as Minister of Education, I created The Progetto Lingue to increase communicative competence in foreign languages using the expertise of awarding organisations such as Trinity College London. Twenty years later, thousands of teachers and schools are benefitting from Trinity’s training and offer its exams.

In 2019, in my current role as President of the National Committee for the Practical Learning of Music, I collaborated with Trinity on a research project, creating a community of music teachers and promoting internationalisation. Trinity’s role as an independent education charity aligns with the mission of the Committee and has facilitated an extension of the project for another three years.”
