Trinity’s Music Theory exams, digitised for the 21st-century learner

11 Oct 2023

Trinity College London is delighted to introduce its new Digital Music Theory exams, designed to offer learners the convenience of the digital age while maintaining the musical integrity that defines Trinity’s renowned music theory assessments. These innovative digital exams provide candidates with the flexibility to choose when and where they take their exams, with all eight grades available immediately.

Initially accessible to candidates in India, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom, Trinity's intention is to extend availability to many more countries in the future.

  • Gain a solid foundation in music literacy: the conventions of Western music notation, melody, rhythm, harmony and composition.
  • Write and edit staff notation at all grades; intuitive notation software makes music writing simple and accessible for all candidates throughout the exam.
  • Build knowledge of music history, as well as form and instrumental capabilities.
  • Complements the development of instrumental and vocal performance skills.

Flexible and Convenient

On-demand exams may be taken at a place, date and time that suits the learner. Candidates can enrol for their exams when ready and take it from the comfort and convenience of a familiar place such as home or at school.

User-friendly Platform

These digital exams benefit from easy-to-use, industry-leading notation software. Candidates can familiarise themselves with the notation software and answer example questions in our free online practice area.

Easy booking, quick results

Exams are bookable online, with results available as soon as an exam has been marked. It is also easy to keep track of previous exam results in the personal dashboard area. The regulated, digital certificate can be accessed and shared online via candidates’ certificate account area.

Accessible

Trinity’s theory exam can be easily taken on any computer with an internet connection.

Preparation support

Candidates can explore the different types of exam questions freely on the website at any time and take advantage of the free familiarisation tutorials provided with the digital exam. And as the exam format is the same as Trinity’s existing theory papers, the Trinity’s Theory workbook series continues to be an invaluable teaching and learning tool. In addition, candidates and teachers can access free digital practice area or purchase further Theory exam papers from Trinity’s ebook store.

Trinity’s Grade 5 Theory certificate can be used as a prerequisite for Instrumental Graded Examinations grades 6-8 with any exam board. Trinity does not have a Theory requirement for its own Instrumental Graded Exams.

Trinity is excited to bring music theory into the digital era with its Digital Music Theory exams, ensuring that even more students have the opportunity to access these fully regulated exams, wherever and whenever they wish to. Explore the Digital Music Theory pages now.
