Theory and Composition Diplomas

Trinity’s range of Diplomas is being updated and some of our higher level qualifications are due to be withdrawn. For more details on which ones, and the timeline for withdrawal please read our news release.

Please note that requirements for theory and composition diplomas changed in January 2017. The new syllabus and sample papers are available to download.

NB There is no overlap, so the 2009 syllabus may no longer be used.

Music Theory

Trinity’s theory diplomas require a broad understanding of theoretical and analytical concepts and procedures, in addition to a wide-ranging knowledge of music history in the Western classical tradition.

They are offered at three levels:

  • Associate (AMusTCL): equivalent in standard to the first year of an undergraduate degree
  • Licentiate (LMusTCL): equivalent in standard to the final year of an undergraduate degree
  • Fellowship (FMusTCL): equivalent in standard to a postgraduate course at a conservatoire or university
