Supporting tests

Specifications for aural tests and improvisation tests are changing for all instruments. The changes apply to all exams taken from 1 January 2017 onwards.

Please note that there is no overlap for supporting tests, and the previous aural tests and improvisation tests can therefore no longer be used.

Please note that there is no change to the unpitched aural tests for drum kit.

In addition to performing pieces and technical work, candidates take two supporting tests. Parameters for each grade are outlined at the front of each syllabus. Please check these carefully when preparing for the exam.

We offer a number of resources to help teachers and candidates prepare for this section of the exam:

Aural

Aural specifications are changing from 1 January 2017 onwards for all instruments.

Sight reading

Sight reading is an option up to and including Grade 5, but compulsory from Grade 6 onwards.

  • Examples of sight reading tests for most instruments are available in the Sound at Sight series. These books are available to purchase from your local music retailer or from our online shop.
  • Percussion and additional drum kit sight reading examples can be obtained from www.sightreadingcentral.co.uk.

Improvisation

Improvisation specifications are changing from 1 January 2017 onwards for all instruments.

Musical knowledge

Musical knowledge is available up to and including Grade 5.

You should read the syllabus requirements carefully before your exam. If you do not meet all the relevant requirements, the examiner may refer your exam result to Trinity’s London office for review and marks may be deducted.

Please see Information and Regulations and Syllabus infringements for more information.
